He raises his hands and turns slowly. ‘Easy now,’ I say. It feels like a lifetime, but a moment is all it takes for him to lower the gun, close an eye and cock the hammer.

‘You can’t help me, Detective.’

He aims at me for a moment then turns the gun on himself. His eyes become clear and focused. He pauses, waiting for me to talk him down.

‘David, you need to lower the gun. A companion of mine is with your wife. He’s called for medical support. Was your daughter in the car when it went over?’

He nods.

‘Did you fire your weapon?’

He nods. ‘I thought he’d stop. I didn’t want him hurting Sarah like he’d hurt Jeanie. I thought I could get Sarah out of the car before Grant could do anything.’

‘Jeanie, your wife …’ He nods. ‘She’s going to get help. We need to go and check on Sarah.’

Then it dawns on me, just as the crackle of my walkie-talkie interrupts the night. How’d he know the guy was called Grant if he didn’t know him?

‘Oh,’ is all I can utter.

Johnson’s face changes. A fearful smirk appears. ‘Well, ain’t you a clever son of a bitch?’

‘Sug. Watch yourself. Johnson stabbed her. She was leaving him. She told him the kid isn’t his. He’s cleaning house.’

He raises his gun as I raise mine. My training kicks in, he has none. His slug hits the flesh of my shoulder, I’ll survive. My slug hits his chest, he won’t.
